Adobe Commerce PolyShell Attacks Breach Hundreds of Stores as Brotli Exploit Traffic Emerges
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on Tuesday added two vulnerabilities impacting Adobe Commerce and Magento, and Google's Brotli decoder library to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities ( KEV ) catalog, citing evidence of active exploitation.

Exposure therefore depends on whether an application passes attacker-controlled compressed data to the affected decoder." ELLIO also reported on Monday that its sensors "have recorded CVE-2026-111497 exploit traffic in the wild, carrying the public exploit that we confirmed gets a shell on vulnerable builds." The activity originates from " 94.154.43[.]7 ," an IP address geolocated to the Netherlands that has also engaged in exploitation efforts targeting PHP2Shell , two critical flaws in PHP that could result in unauthenticated remote code execution .
Tracked as CVE-2026-111497 , this critical-severity flaw stems from an out-of-bounds write weakness in the Brotli decoder used to expand data compressed with Google's widely popular Brotli lossless compression algorithm.
Threat intelligence firm ELLIO reported on Monday that its sensors “have recorded CVE-2026-111497 exploit traffic in the wild, carrying the public exploit that we confirmed gets a shell on vulnerable builds.” The company says that 94.154.43.7 – the IP address from which exploitation attempts are coming – has previously been observed carrying exploits for PHP2Shell and has been involved in Palo Alto GlobalProtect and FortiOS SSL VPN probing, and Kubernetes API and container orchestration scanning.
Organizations running a discontinued release line should move to a supported release line." Google-owned Wiz warned that "91% of cloud environments have resources vulnerable to CVE-2026-111497 and 82% of cloud environments have publicly exposed Node.js instances." "Node2Shell is not a bug in every Node.js service, but a bug in services that decode attacker-influenced Brotli," Sysdig said .

The vulnerability has been reported under several names because it was initially identified in Node.js before researchers found that the same flaw in the Brotli decoder could affect software across multiple ecosystems.

(End-of-life 20.x, 23.x and 25.x lines are also affected, but will not get a fix.) But, as Tenable researchers noted , “any application that decompresses attacker-controlled data with a vulnerable Brotli decoder is potentially at risk, including Node.js, .NET, Bun, Envoy Proxy, Istio, Python HTTP clients, FFmpeg, Apache Arrow and ClickHouse.” Maintainers of most of these projects have already updated dependencies and made available fixed releases.
The development comes days after Sansec said it observed attackers leveraging CVE-2026-48356, also known as PolyShell, to breach hundreds of e-commerce stores to inject a malicious loader via a Magento CMS block.
Broccoli2Shell (a.k.a Node2Shell and HTTP2Shell) originates from an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the Brotli decoder, a widely adopted compression component used to reduce the size of HTTP traffic and other data.

Technical details
The development comes days after Sansec said it observed attackers leveraging CVE-2026-48356, also known as PolyShell, to breach hundreds of e-commerce stores to inject a malicious loader via a Magento CMS block.
Broccoli2Shell (a.k.a Node2Shell and HTTP2Shell) originates from an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the Brotli decoder, a widely adopted compression component used to reduce the size of HTTP traffic and other data.
As for CVE-2026-111497 (aka Broccoli2Shell, HTTP2Shell, and Node2Shell), telemetry data from threat intelligence firm Previdian shows that one exploitation attempt has been recorded against its honeypot sensors from a U.S.-based IP address as of October 27, 2026.
Response
On Friday, the PHP security team also shared mitigation measures for a new RCE vulnerability (tracked as CVE-2026-115560) that has no patch and can only be exploited when targeting systems "with an unusual combination of configuration and application code." Until a security patch is released, the PHP devs advised admins to set session.upload_progress.enabled=0 to block potential attacks, a mitigation already recommended before patches for the PHP2Shell security updates were released.
The fix for CVE-2026-111497 was committed to google/brotli on 27 February 2026, with no release and no advisory, and stayed publicly readable for eight months.
What security teams should do
CVE-2026-111497 is classified as an out-of-bounds write ( CWE-787 ) and an unchecked return value ( CWE-252 ).
